چکیده

The temporal fluctuations in the near plume of a 100-A LaB6 hollow cathode are experimentally investigated. A probe array is employed to measure the amplitude and dispersion of axial modes in the plume, and these properties are parametrically examined as a function of cathode operating investigations. The onset of ion acoustic turbulence (IAT) is observed at high current values, and the character of the turbulent spectrum is shown to agree with weak turbulent theory: the amplitude of the spectrum decreases with flow rate but increases with discharge current while the shape of the spectrum at high frequencies is characterized by Kadomtsev decay. Estimates of the anomalous collision frequency based on experimental measurements indicate that the IAT collision frequency can exceed the classical rate at high discharge current densities and that the magnitude of the anomalous collision frequency is sufficient to explain deviations of the experimentally-observed parameters from classical predictions. Additionally, the growth of the IAT is shown to be correlated with the appearance of a high energy ion tail.

Current Status of 5A Lab6 Hollow Cathode Life Tests in Lanzhou Institute of Physics, China

The current statuses of lifetime test of LaB6 hollow cathode at the Lanzhou Institute of Physics (LIP), China, was described. 5A LaB6 hollow cathode was design for LIPS-200 40mN Xenon ion thruster, and it could be used for LHT-100 80 mN Hall thruster, too. Life test of the discharge and neutralizer modes of LHC-5 hollow cathode were stared in October 2011, and cumulative operation time reached ...

Numerical Simulations of the Partially-ionized Gas in a 100-A LaB6 Hollow Cathode

Numerical simulations of a hollow cathode with a LaB6 emitter operating at 100 A have been performed for the first time using the 2-D Orificed Cathode (OrCa2D) code. Results for a variety of plasma properties are presented and compared with laboratory measurements. The large size of the device permits peak electron number densities in the cathode interior that are lower than those established i...

Development of Hollow Cathodes for Space Electric Propulsion at Sitael

Hollow cathodes are electron sources used for the gas ionization and the beam neutralization in both ion and Hall effect thrusters (HETs). A reduction of power and propellant consumption from the cathode is particularly needed in small satellite applications, where power and mass budgets are inherently limited. Concurrently, the interest in high-power HETs is increasingly fostered for a number ...

Preliminary Measurements of Time-Resolved Ion Velocity Distributions Near a Hollow Cathode

Presented are preliminary measurements of near-cathode ion velocity distributions using time-resolved laser induced fluorescence. Two experiments were performed. First, time-averaged velocity distributions were measured in a LaB6 hollow cathode plume under the influence of a Hall thruster magnetic field provided by the 6-kW H6 thruster. The discharge was sustained without a downstream anode but...

Ignition and Early Operating Characteristics of a Low- Current C12A7 Hollow Cathode

Calcium aluminate electride 12CaO-7Al2O3:4e(e.g., C12A7:e-) shows promise as a low temperature electron emitter for hollow cathodes in spacecraft electric propulsion, but the material’s basic performance limits remain poorly understood, including an exact value for work function. As a supplement to a companion paper examining C12A7:eemission in a planar close-spaced diode configuration in vacuu...
